AI in the Classroom: Problem or Progress?

April 07, 2025

"Are kids cheating on their homework with AI?

It's unfortunate, but kids in high school and college are using services like ChatGPT to do their homework and write essays. It's estimated that a big portion of the 400 million people that use ChatGPT every week are students. Now, Open AI is probably very happy about this, since it's likely the students will depend on AI for their lifetimes. Of students who admit to using AI in middle school and high school, roughly 40% of them said they use it without permission from the school or the teacher. College students were even worse, with nearly 50% saying that they're using AI without permission from their professors or the college.

The biggest area of abuse appears to be students using AI to write essays. The problem here is that the students may be losing the capability of putting their thoughts onto paper by having it done for them. AI tools do exist that can help teachers detect ChatGPT-generated writing, but some have claimed these tools may hurt the business of students paying for and using AI. I have mixed feelings about this, because when the students get into the workforce, they'll have to think for themselves; but then again, knowing how to use AI to become more productive may be a valuable tool for them in that same workforce."
